Solar panel and profitability: 4 strong signals and one obvious truth

Green certificates, being disconnected from the grid, meters running backwards, bonuses... It's not always easy to know where to stand when it comes to the profitability of a photovoltaic installation or a solar carport.

Nevertheless, there are a number of clear signs that you should be on the right track: investing in solar panels is as good for your finances as it is for the planet... and for once, when the two go hand in hand, it would be a shame to miss out. The Solena team tells you all about it!

1. The price of electricity is constantly increasing

The first signal that cannot have escaped you concerns the current uncertainties about energy prices. We won't go into detail about the impact of the war in Ukraine, the phasing out of nuclear power and the gradual rise of electric vehicles, but it's undeniable that market disruption is far from over.

For this reason alone, the use of solar energy is as prudent as it is advantageous: by producing your own green electricity, you reduce your energy bill and protect yourself against price rises.

According to Luminus, a 3.87 KWp* installation can produce 3,290 kWh per year in Belgium, representing potential annual savings of around 800 euros. At this rate, a photovoltaic installation can quickly pay for itself, especially given the reliability and lifespan of today's solar panels.

2. A remedy for inflation

With an inflation rate of 10.2% in 2022, this is the 3rd strong signal that your money needs to be productive. Investing in a photovoltaic system or a solar carport is therefore far more beneficial than letting your savings lose their value in your bank account. The cost of installing solar panels has fallen dramatically in recent years, to the point where, according to recent studies, an installation becomes profitable in less than 7 years.

Today, the financial return on a photovoltaic installation is estimated at between 7% and 8%, which is much higher than the interest rate offered by savings accounts. What's more, solar panels have a lifespan of at least 25 years, so you can be sure of producing free green electricity for many years to come.

3. Increasingly electric mobility

Whether you like them or not, electric vehicles are set to become widespread. 2035 will mark the end of internal combustion engines in Europe, while the switch to "100% emission-free" company cars will take place as early as 2026! Once again, this is a strong signal in favour of photovoltaic energy.

The situation is even more obvious if you have an electric vehicle or are planning to acquire one in the near future. At a time when fuel prices are rising all the time, using the energy produced by your own solar panels or solar carport is a great way of avoiding having to pay more than €100 for a full tank. It's a good idea to get ahead of the game and install now to avoid delays or potential shortages later on.

4. Real estate capital gains

Clé sur porte

Last but not least, the icing on the cake: with its long service life, your installation also has a positive impact on the value of your property. It is an undeniable asset for potential buyers looking to make energy savings, and will be easily exploitable for many years to come.

According to a study carried out by the Technical University of Eindhoven, a third of the 227 people questioned thought that the value of a house with solar panels would increase by around €5,000. So investing in solar panels is doubly profitable if you're thinking of selling your property in the next few years!
